David Richardson

An award-winning journalist, David has covered some of the biggest stories in recent years and is a renowned investigative reporter.

David Richardson is a senior investigative reporter at Today Tonight.

For six years he has investigated some of the biggest stories the program has produced.

From investigations into Sydney nursing homes, illegal dumping in Sydney's suburbs, security at NSW prisons, and the "chase for Skase", as well as four stints in war ravaged East Timor, David has extensive experience in television current affairs journalism.

A graduate of the University of South Australia's Journalism School, David began his career on a country newspaper.

He soon joined country radio where he won a coveted Pater Award as co-producer of the most outstanding station promotion in the country.

His work covering big rural events, such as the Cobar bushfires and the shearers' dispute, quickly brought him to the attention of both Sydney radio editors and an Adelaide television news director.

Television won and the rest is history.

For four years David worked at Seven in South Australia as a reporter and part time newsreader before being lured to Sydney to work at Seven News.

During this period he won a Thorn award for television reporting.

Within 18 months he had stepped up to the world of current affairs on the Hinch program.

His career highlights include covering the Bangladeshi cyclone, the murder and funeral of Indian leader Rajiv Gandhi, a world exclusive story on driftnet fishing as well as locating Derryn Hinch after his Hawaii home was destroyed by Hurricane Iniki.

David has worked at both Seven and Ten, heading up a documentary film unit at Ten producing films on dolphins and whales, centrefold models, as well as yearly news reviews called Rewind.

After breaking news stories during the Super League war, he was recalled to Seven, a network he says "feels like home", to work at Today Tonight.

While investigative journalism is his forte, David has also interviewed the rich and famous including the Minogue sisters, Sarah O'Hare, Austin Powers' Mike Meyers and a string of popular Australian stars.

His investigative work led to the opening of inquiries into mysterious deaths and a tightening of security at NSW prisons, after scoring exclusive footage of prisoners climbing out at night.

He also covered the horror of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, producing a world exclusive story from inside one of the terrorist's apartment and getting special access to a US Marine Corps training facility in Quantico. David then returned to the Big Apple with the Today Tonight team for the first anniversary of the attacks.

David was also in Bali in the aftermath of the Sari nightclub bombing there in 2002, where he reported on the devastation of the attack. In 2003, he led a team to the Gulf war, for three months covering Australia's commitment to the war from Kuwait, Qatar and southern Iraq. David was the first Australian television reporter to gain access to our troops on the ground.

A married father of two, David enjoy martial arts, working out at the gym, golf and soccer.

In spite of his hectic schedule, David most likes to spend as much time as possible with his two kids.
