Lauren Bush: charity-in-chief

  • Reporter: Sally Obermeder

Uncle George is the most powerful man in the world and her grandfather, also George, once was. Another uncle was a State Governor and her boyfriend also has a famous name - David Lauren, son of Ralph.

She has looks, money and is as down to earth as you'd want. Even though she'd spent holidays at the White House, there are no Oval Office perks here
- Lauren Bush is the ultimate celebrity do-gooder.

Lauren Bush gave up her modelling career to start FEED Projects. The mission is to feed starving children. In 2007, she and business partner Ellen Gustafson, began selling the bags around the world and in less than 18 months, they've sold enough to donate $5 million to the United Nations World Food Program.

Neither is afraid to get their hands dirty, roughing it in the worlds poorest countries.

"Buy a bag feed a child. Each bag feeds a child in school for 1 year through the UN World Food Program. So with each bag sold, we give a donation to the UN World Food Program," Lauren said.

Lauren Bush's well aware the family name has given her the fame she needed to make a fortune.

"When I was born my grandfather was already Vice President. So really, the whole political scene I've been born into and I kind of grew up in - I feel very blessed," she said.

Lauren said the Bush family are "a very fun bunch".

"One thing that is very traditional of ours is a backgammon tournament which is very competitive and fierce, but very friendly and fun at the same time," she said.

The Republican version of the Kennedy clan, the Bush family loves it's board games. But just as serious is Lauren's Aussie visit to promote her bags.

Vogue Editor, Kirstie Clements said, "She's using her connections for something that's really powerful and wonderful".

The bag is no Chanel - more like a trendy grocery bag - but celebrities are running with it. Marcia Cross and Reece Witherspoon both have bags, and there's also been support from Former First lady, Lauren's grandma, Barbara Bush.

"She's been a big promoter," Lauren said.

And despite the genes, Lauren has no hunger for politics. Still: we had to ask.

"I have to say I didn't realise how closely Australians were really following this election," she said.

And the deal breaker - McCain or Obama?

"Really, I am undecided. I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses," Lauren said.

At the moment, Lauren Bush is very much running her own race.

"You know my name is not on the bag, it's not on the tag - it's not the Lauren show it's really about FEED and what we are trying to do," she said.

The FEED bags will be on sale at David Jones - nationwide - as of Monday and will sell for $69.95.
