Getting the Lotto edge

  • Reporter: Marguerite McKinnon

Not since lotteries began has there ever been a bigger week to win but what does it take to get the edge on Lotto?

Every state and territory has a record jackpot, begging to be won by the lucky few.

Queensland has a total of $68 million in lotteries this week, New South Wales $82 million, Western Australia $69 million, South Australia $70 million with Victoria, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory collectively having $71 million dollars to be won.

John Vineburg from NSW Lotteries said it is down to the luck of the draw.

"We don't know ourselves when the big jackpot was going to occur," he said.

"We've had people win on an entry worth a few dollars, we've had people win on big systems entries.

"We've had people win with their own numbers and we've had people win with autopicks."

So before you think about driving off in a hot red Ferrari, you might want to think about the odds of actually winning.

Mathematics and statistics expert, Dr Clio Chesswell, said Lotto odds are too small.

Dr Chesswell has calculated the chance of winning the lotteries this week is 0.00000000000000000000001.
