Weight loss champion

  • Reporter: Andrea Burns

Bobby Ballantyne is an inspiration. The mum of seven used to weigh 231kg. To date she has lost 136kg and now weighs 96kg.

Bobby Ballantyne used to just stay home and eat.

"In one day I would eat lots of bread with butter, I'd eat an entire cake, a full packet of biscuits and a whole block of chocolate," she said.

Life was painful and difficult, the simplest chores an ordeal.

"My back was killing me, my ankles had swollen up to the size of balloons, I was completely out of breath," Ms Ballantyne said.

"To mop my floors I'd have to sit on the desk chair with wheels and I'd have to push myself along," she added.

Her wake-up call came when she fell in the shower and could not get up.

"I didn't think I was going to get out and thought the only way was the fire brigade will probably take out the window and part of the wall to get me out that way," Ms Ballantyne said.

After the ordeal she joined Weight Watchers.

Her first goal was to fit on the digital scales. Because of her large size Ms Ballantyne had to be weighed on special scales.

It took several months but she reached her first goal.

"There were other women in the meeting who cheered. It just felt unbelievable. I look back now and I had such a long way to go, I mean I was like 200kg, but I was like everybody else," Ms Ballantyne said.

"I hope I'm an inspiration to all those people out there who think they can't do it."
