Freedom of Information

The legislation is about enhancing government accountability and participation in the democratic system of government.

FOI gives you the right to request documents - including paperwork, computer records, audiotapes, videotapes and CDs - held by ministers, state and federal government departments, local councils, most semi-government agencies and statutory authorities, public hospitals and community health centres as well as universities, TAFE colleges and schools.

You have the right to access documents about your personal affairs and the activities of government agencies as well as the right to request that incorrect or misleading information held by an agency about you be amended or removed.

Each state and territory government as well as the Commonwealth has individual Freedom of Information legislation.
